Stopdrop Tooling Dropped Object Alert – Protector Plate falls from Crane

Dropped Object Alert

A falling object was spotted by a crane operator whilst the crane was in operation earlier this week. The object has been identified as a nylon protector plate which fell from the crane boom. No one was injured as a result of the nylon protector plate becoming a dropped object and there was also no damage to the rig platform below. The weight of the nylon protector plate was 0.95kg and it dropped a total of 40m, therefore the impact energy of the dropped object would have been enough to cause a fatality.

It’s believed the protector plate design will be reviewed and an investigation as to if the crane was being operated correctly will take place as a result of this incident. Static dropped objects are the most common type of dropped objects. Always use ‘Safe tooling for Working At Height’ to prevent tools becoming dropped objects.
